Picture: This picture shows Boeing 737 in flight using biofuels.
Summary: United Airlines used a mix of Solazyme algae biofuels and traditional jet fuels. Passengers flew from Houston to Chicago. Business Green reports that 40% of the fuel is biofuels and 60% is traditional jet fuels. United airlines wasn't the first to come up with this idea. Insiders speculate that Alaska Airlines was the first to think of this idea. United Airlines however, rushed to get the first biofuel flight off the ground. Alaska Airlines has shown that they are more commited to this biofuel idea in planes but United Airlines just stole their idea. United Airlines was greatly praised for a great discovery that biofuels with traditional plane fuels actualy work.
Opinion/Reflection: I think this is a great idea. We can cut back on how much traditional jet fuel and use more of biofuel. We have to be careful when using biofuels too, because that could run out too. United should of waited until Alaska flew the first flight with biofuels because it was orginally Alaska's idea. I think this will definatley conserve the traditional gas and save that for the future. I fly alot because of vacations and visits with family members. I flew all over the world. It would be awesome if i could get on a flight with biofuel being used.
Questions:
1) How do you think Alaska Airlines came up with the idea of Biofuels in airplanes?
2) What are the positives and Negitives of the new method of fueling airplanes ?
3)How would this help the environment? Why or why not?
OPINION/REFLECTION: It is great to finally see that we have come up with some other way to be eco friendly. Fossil fuels have been really killing the Earth and having something even slightly better is great to come about. Even though Unied Airlines "stole" the idea, I think that one airline using it is not enough. Using bio fuels should have always been an option and now other airlines should use the same idea. I also travel to many places constantly and not only does it feel cool to fly on a plane that started using bio fuels, I also feel like I am treating the Earth with more care. Hopefully other airlines will eventually figure out how to use bio fuels and we can all feel greener than before.
ReplyDeleteANSWERS TO QUESTIONS:
1)I think that Alaska Airlines was searching for a way to go greener and actually looked for some other source of fuel. Nowadays everyone is looking for a way to treat the environment with more respet and Alaska Airlines searched and found what they were looking for.
2)Some positives are that 1 we are going green and it is better for the environment, 2 the spread of ideas shows that people care more for the Earth and that more people will pick up on the trend. I cannot think of any negatives except that there may be problems rising between airlines and who can make the better next big thing. This is good and bad I guess.
3) It would put less of certain gases/pollutants into the air than regular fuel. Even though this is slightly greener, they still need to figure out how to cut back even more because there are still pollutants being put into the air, just not as much.
EXTRA QUESTIONS: 1)Why do you think we have waited until now to figure this out? What has been holding us back?
2) Would you rather fly United Airlines over other airlines because of this discovery? Why or why not?
3) How do you think this discovery will effect not only the environment, but also the sales and use of certain airlines?
4) Do you think that bio fuels would be less money or more money to buy and use than regular jet fuel? Why?
Reflection: I think this is a great idea, although they should not have stolen it from the Alaskan group, although that is how the world works. It is great that they found an eco-friendly, greener way for planes to fly because its not like planes will just stop flying. Planes are a big part of out transportation, and it is good that they found a greener solution to the jet fuel so it will be grenner for the world. This affects me because when i fly, i know I'll be helping the enviorment/making it not as bad.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
3) There would be less polluants in the air, which helps with air pullution. It would also be safer for the people who fuel the planes/work with the plane fuel.
1) How much better is it actually for the enviorment?
2) How much more/less does this cost?
3) Is it actaully worth switching other than partially saving the enviorment?
4) Are there any other ways for planes to eco-friendlyly (not a real word, i know) fly, such as solar powered??
Opinion/Reflection: I don't think it's a bad thing that US stole their idea if it's good for the environment. I think this is such a great idea and more airports around the world should use biofuels also. Since airplanes are such a huge part of transportation, biofuels will really be helping our environment. This is good to know because when I go on vacations and fly in a plane, I know it's helping our environment.
ReplyDeleteAnswers to some questions:
1. I think they knew that planes was such a big transportation that they wanted to find a fuel that is safe for the environment.
2. A positive is that it is good for the environment and a negative is that there could e side effects of biofuels that we don't know about that might be bad.
Other Questions:
1. Is this more expensive than biofuels?
2. Are other places around the world going to start using biofuels also?
(in my question that I asked, I meant to say than other fuels.)
ReplyDeleteOpinion: I this this is a great idea, even though it was stolen. I still think that finding eco friendly ways to fly is a good thing. They should have waited to let Alaskan Airlines to come out with it, but at least more airplane companies are converting! I think that even more airplane companies should start to do this as well. We just have to make sure that this doesn't make us have a low supply on biofuels. Now, I feel better when I fly because I know it isn't harming the environment as much!
ReplyDeleteAnswers to Questions:
1. I think that they wanted to find a more eco friendly way to fly the planes because they are so big in the transportation industry and big in size too.
2. One positive is that it is good for the environment and a couple negatives could be competition, or us running out of biofuels.
Questions:
1. Will we run out of biofuels in the near future?
2. Is this going to cost a lot more money then the regular fuel?
