Bicycle Oriented Development in Portland

Picture: People gather round a park while their bikes are all locked to the racks.

Summary: Portland is trying to "go green" by creating a bicycle friendly environment and trying to switch people from cars to bikes. So far, about 7% are going to work and other places on bikes, and the national average is usually under 1%! By the year 2030 they want to have at least 25% of their population using bikes instead of cars. Lots of businesses have bike racks and storage and even lend a bike lock to people who forgot theirs. In their plan for the future, Portland wants to create bike boulevards and tracks so the workers and people in general who want to get around are not stuck with the conflict of cars. They also want to increase the amount of parking and storage for the bikes and increase the funding for the bikes.

Opinion: I think that this idea is really cool. If you're not going far to work and it is a nice day, why not ride bikes and save some energy? It's a great concept that maybe will inspire places like New York and large cities to walk and bike more. Plus, it costs less to get a bike then to buy a car and pay for gas.

Questions:
1. Do you think this is a good idea? Why/why not?
2. Would there be a negative factor about this? Explain.
3. Would this help solve our global warming issue? Why/why not?

  2. Opinion/Reflection: I think that is a good idea because it is helping our enviroment. It's nice to see that a lot of poeple are actually taking part in riding bikes more because everyone knows that riding bikes is better for the enviroment than driving, but no one really goes through with it. This reminds me of when I ride bikes with my friends to places rather than driving, but we just do it for fun but it's also helping the enviroment!

    Question Answers:
    1. I think this is a good idea because it's so much better for the enviroment than driving and it costs less.
    2. I don't think there is a negative factor because it's helping the environment and the economy. They just need to make paths for bikes so they don't get in the way of cars driving.
    3. I don't know too much about the global warming issue, but from what i heard I think that this would help.

    Questions:
    1. Why don't more people around here ride more bikes?
    2. Why are riding bikes so much better for the environment than driving cars?
    3. What would this do to gas prices?

  3. opinion/reflection:This sounds like a great ecofriendly idea.Although this may not work for some people, we should all do our best to ride bikes to areas close to us. I could ride my bike to Wawa instead of having a guardian take me by car and I could help a lot over time. I agree with Julia because not only is riding fun, but the environment will later thank us. The gas and pollution that we have already put in the air is attrocious. We better start going green now before its too late.

Answers: 1)This is a good idea because not only is riding our bikes an exercise and fun, it is helping the environment. GO GREEN! :)
2)For the most part, no there would not be a negative. The only negative factor is our valuable time. We need to get to places fast and farther away and we cannot ALL accomplish this using a bike.
3)I think this would help the global warming issue a little more. When you think about it, humans have done so many things other than using cars that have affected the environment. This would be a start to help the issue.

Questions:1)What kind of road system may the local area or government come up with in the future for bike riding if it becomes more popular?
2)How will car dealers and such be affected by this sudden change?
3)Do you think that riding bikes will ever have a larger percentage of use than cars? Why or why not?

  4. Reflection: This sounds really cool. It seems like a good idea to help reduce the car pollution, as well as provide excersice to Americans. This could also set a great example to other highly populated cities to help reduce the pollution in the air. It would also be safe becasue there would be bike lanes. It affects me because the air would be getting cleaner from the lower car pollution, espeically if this were to happen all of the world!

    Answers to Questions:
    1) I think that this is a great idea. It will help lower air pollution, create less traffic, provide more excerise to Americans, and so much more. It would also really benifit highly populated cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and other cities.
2)I think the only negative factor could be that biking wouldn't be able to get us where we need to go fast enough and people would still have to own cars to go to farther places such as another state or Philadelphia (for us).
3)This would help solve the global warming issue because the air pollution would decrease, and the more places participating, the more it would drop. Air pollution is on of the causes of global warming.

    Questions:
Is it worth the government's time and money to make bike lanes/pass laws to keep the bikers safe?
Would this really help or are the over-exageratting?
Would people still have cars? If so, what could car companies do to promote buying cars instead of biking?
How could biking become more useful like a car (having a roof/weather issues, seating a whole family, storage, etc.)
Why don't people currently ride bikes?
What if cars became illegal (hypothetically)? What positive and negative effects could this have?

  5. Opinion/Reflection: I think this is a great idea. This could very well slow down global warming. This idea could also save gas in the long run and save peoplea lot of money to. This idea is very "green".

    Questions:
    1) Yes because this will cause less air pollution and save people more money on gas.
2)Biking to work could take a long time if you are not very local. That could be a factor of not riding a bike.
3)No because it could slow it down but not completley stop it.

    More Questions:
    1) Would riding bike cause more or less accidents than cars would?
    2) Does riding bike benefit you in anyway?
    3) Would riding bike solve global warming?
