Why Are the Rainforests Disappearing?

http://www.theenvironmentalblog.org/2011/09/rainforests-disappearing/

Picture:This graphic is a picture that was taken in a rainforest. These are some areas and habitats that are being destroyed due to certain human activity.

Summary: Rainforests are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet due to the variety of species it holds and the large perentage of the air we breathe. There are plants that produce medicines that are needed to cure certain diseases that lie within these forests. As you may have heard, rainforests are being torn down every seond of the day. This priceless resource that is so important is being torn down and paved over. It says here in the article that 50,000 square miles has been lost due to deforestation from 2000 to 2005. After a large area of rainforest is torn down, that land is only fertile for a certain amount of time. All if this means that farmers are going to move on to another section of the rainforest to clear. After using the land to farm, the soil turns dusty, rough, and unusable. These people are never satisfied and have to keep taring down parts of the rainforest. This technique called 'slash and burn' is what farmers use and is known for destructing half of the total rainforest. Another thing that is tearing down the rainforests is called logging. This is the second biggest reason for the destruction of these forests. There are countless other factors that have put the rainforest in this situation that also include mining and global warming.

Opinion/Reflection: I know that this information is kind of considered old news, but I just cannot believe how much worse this is getting. How come the government or others actually living around the rainforest are not doing anything? I do not think it is right that we just keep going into places like forests or natural areas and destroy nature. Knowing that this priceless natural resource is being destroyed by the people that need it most is astounding. We share the earth with countless other organisms and we do the most damage to everything. If this gets even worse, oxygen levels will be going down to shocking levels and air will be even more polluted than it already is.

Questions:
1) What other things, other than what has already been mentioned, are destroying the rainforests?
2)Who is the main fault for these problems?
3)Are there any things that the government or anyone else can do to slow down or stop the disappearing of the rainforests?
4) What problems would we have if there were little to no rainforests?

  1. Opinion/Reflection: This is just shocking that no one who tears down these rainforests understands how important they are. If rainforests are one of the most important ecosystems, then why tear them down? If they want to use land for buildings and such then why not use open land instead of important rainforests? Tearing them down is also affecting us too rather than just the organsims that live in them. Tearing down rainforests is decreasing our oxygen we use to breathe. It this is such a big topic, then why hasn't anybody done something to stop it?

    Question Answers:
    1. Some other things that are destroying rainforests are logging, hunting, dams, and fuelwood. People that use fuelwood are over cutting trees that is not necessary.
    2. There is not exactly one person's fault. It is everybody's fault who watches this happen and doesn't do anything about it and it is everyone's fault who is involved in destroying the rainforests.
    3. Yes, the government can try banning cutting down certain rainforests. They can also tell the people they can only cut a certain amount of the rainforest down.
    4. We would have destroyed food webs. We would also be extremely decreased in the oxygen we breathe.

    Questions:
    1. Why are people so involved with destroying ecosystems and food webs?
    2. Why haven't people done something about this already?
    3. Why is a rainforest one of the most important ecsystems?

  3. Opinion: I think it is terrible that our rain forests are disappearing! Rain forests are really important to our eco system and we can't keep letting farmers and builders, etc ruining the forests. There are plenty of other places for farmers and other people to use instead of tearing down the forests and the ecosystems inside them. Someone should really do something about this before our oxygen level on the earth decreases.

    Question Answers:
    1. Some examples of things that are ruining the forests are, hunters because they kill the animals that live in the forest and loggers who take down the trees.
    2. There really isn't one main group or person. It is the combination of the loggers, hunters, farmers, etc. that are ruining the forest. But, the government is also at fault because they are not focusing on the forests as much as they should.
    3. Yes, the government can reenforce the laws, if there are any, that stop destruction in the rain forests and maybe even make some new laws against it.
    4. We would have destroyed many ecosystems and there would be a decrease in oxygen in the air.

    Questions:
    1. Why doesn't the government focus on this growing issue?
    2. Why do the farmers have to take the rain forests' land?

  4. Okay so for some reason my comments won't post but I guess I'll try again.

This is a really big deal. I mean I always knew it was, but I never knew that it was THIS bad. So many species of animals and plants that haven't even been discovered yet could go extinct and we would never even know about them! The rainforest has a high biodiversity because of all the species living there and by ruining the habitat, we are not only lowering the biodiversity but also killing speices. This obviously impacts me becasue without all of those trees to take CO2 out of the air and replace it with oxygen, that could greatly affect not only me, but every human and animal!!

    Questions:
    1) Logging is obviously the biggest one, but the pollution from all the machines they are using is also doing a lot of damage.
2)I think the main people at fault are humans because they are the ones who are doing the destruction and although people are trying to stop them, they aren't making a big enough impact becasue they are obviously still ruining the rainforest!
    3) The government could make them replant the trees that they cut down, as well as make laws to how many trees can be cut down per day/week/month/year/etc.
4)Oxygen levels would dramatically decrease and we would also have a lot less species of animals and plants because they wouldn't have a habitat becasue they couldnt adjust quick enough.

...as well as the previous website posted

    Questions:
    1) What can humans do to protect the rainforest?
    2) How can we help save the animals? Would putting them in zoos across the world help or hurt them?
    3) How many undiscovered species do you think would be extinct forever if the rainforest was completely destroyed?

  5. Opinion/Reflection: People who cut down there forests are just wrong. Oxygen comes from the lush forests and they also suck up alot of carbon dioxide. I think that farmers should either buy other land or make other land because the rain forests are vital to our ecosystems. If this keeps up all the plants and animals living in the rain forests might
    dissapear! That wouldnt be good.

    Questions:
    1) Deforestation, and loggers
2)I would have to say it is everyone's fault because people could stop people from cutting down these forests.
3)I think not only the govenment should stop this but the whole world should stop this process
4)We would have less oxygen in the air.

  6. Ask questions:
    1) Why do you think people are not taking action to stop this?
2)What would we do if the plants and animals went extinct that lived in these forests?
3)What would happen if there was 100 unfound species?
