Summary: Lebanon provides habitat for some 400 species of birds. At least 15 are threatened with extinction and many more are decreasing because of a hunting ban that is so poorly enforced even environmentalists are working to overturn it. Throughout the year, hunters drive through mountains killing whatever they see. Over-hunting is killing the bird populations in Lebanon. Even gun sellers are all in favor of a law to regulate hunting. Many experts believe the ban has distorted the tradition and led to out of control hunting, like this past spring when a man killed dozens of migratory storks in Lebanon and posted pictures of himself with his dead prey on Facebook. Some poeple think the government should allow controlled hunting seasons.
Opinion/ Reflection: This is just terrible. I can't believe the government isn't enforcing the hunting ban or making any new ones. They are just letting the hunters get away with killing these birds. Killing these birds can be destroying a food web and no one even realizes it. The gun sellers should not want to regulate hunting. They just want to make more money. They don't understand killing these animals and birds are ruining ecsystems. The government really needs to do something about this.
Questions:
1. What are some ways that this hunting can get under control?
2. Whose fault is it that this is happening?
3. What should the government do about this?

ReplyDeleteOPINION/REFLECTION:I cannot believe there are so many problems with things such as this. It really bothers me that hunters just hunt with no care and do not have a limit. Hunters just keep going and the goverment does not have enough time to enforce much. Even though saving species and ecosystems are costly, it is worth it. Once ecosystems go bad and the earth starts dying more and more, people are going to realize that money cannot help anything. These endangered species are going to effect food chains which are going to end up hurting us in the future.
ReplyDeleteANSWERS TO QUESTIONS: 1)Hunters have to set a certain limit as to what they can hunt or how many animals they can hunt. Also, the government should try harder to enforce laws that have to do with hunting.
2)For the most part, it is the hunters fault for not keeping an eye out on the number of animals they kill. These people should be responsible enough to understand how much they are effeting us, other animals, and the world. Also, the government needs to step up and really enforce laws that they put out there.
3)The government, like I said, must be more strict in enforcing laws they make. There is no point to the laws unless they are actually used and enforced. Not enough money is going to preserving and helping the environment. I know money is important for our economy, but it is not useful if we have nowehere to live to use that money.
EXTRA QUESTION: 1)What could we do as individuals to help with these types of problems? 2)Why do you think the government does not enforce these laws and make this more of a public problem? 3)How will these problems with extinction and endangered species effect us in the long run?
Opinion/reflection:This is terrible! Although the hunters obviously want to hunt, they should realize that if they overhunt all of the birds (like they've been doing) then there will soon be no birds left for them to hunt. I was suprised that the gun store salesmen wanted there to be a hunting season/regulations because you would think that they would just want more money. I'm suprised that there is no one really patrolling common hunting grounds. The government should be helping because its their wildlife and it is there job to protect it. There should be hunting seasons like there is in the USA. My dad goes hunting sometimes with his brother, but they only go during the season and hunt around once a year (which helps keep the population safe). Most hunting seasons only last 1 week and then the animals have the rest of the year to come back and reproduce.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1) to get the hunting under control, thy should enforce the hunting rules that already exist. They should set up fines and if people continue to do it, jail time. The fines would pay for the people they could have monitoring the commonly hunted areas. They could also have "no hunt" areas where no hunting is permitted. They could also have shorter hunting seasons.
2) I think that it is a combination of the hunters and the government because they both could be doing something, but choose not to. The hunters should stop hunting to help preserve the wildlife and the government should be making and enforcing laws to protect the wildlife from becoming extinct.
3) the government should be making laws to help protect the birds that are being hunted. They should also be enforcing any previous laws and making to ones to strictly enforce.
QUESTIONS: 1)Are there other people other than hunters that are endangering these animals?Who do you think they are?Do you think that the government should be paying more attention to the situation?
Opinion/Reflection: I think this is horrible. The government should deffinately put a restriction on how many birds a hunter can kill. Sooner or later, these poor birds are going to become extinct. The hunters should know when to to stop and not be addicted to killing innocent animals. I do hope the environmentalists can overturn this crazy happening.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1. The government could put out a certian time of the year in which the hunters can hunt. Also they could make an Open Season to let hunters hunt for about a week.
2.I would say this is both the governments fault and the hunters fault because the government could put some kind of restriction on the hunting and the hunters could restrain themselfs from killing to many prey.
3. I think the government should put a restriction on the amoutn of hunting done.
